The service life of a centrifuge rotor

Overview:

For high-speed and low-speed centrifuge rotors, rotor life is simply specified based on service years; aluminum alloy rotors typically have a lifespan of 7 years.
For high-speed and low-speed centrifuge rotors, rotor life is typically specified simply by a fixed number of years—aluminum alloy rotors generally have a lifespan of 7 years. This approach is clearly not very scientific. Some manufacturers, therefore, also keep track of the number of operating cycles or total operating hours. If a particular rotor is used almost every day for 20 hours at a time, it certainly won't last the full 7-year period. On the other hand, if a centrifuge has been purchased many years ago but remains unused, yet has already reached the manufacturer’s prescribed 7-year mark, our factory’s technical staff usually find that such rotors are still largely usable—though they may need to operate at a slightly reduced speed.

To avoid such situations, users should regularly and carefully inspect rotor components that are prone to corrosion, such as the bottom of the tube holes, the junction between the rotor base and the spindle, and the area around the large threads on the upper part of the rotor. For ultracentrifuge rotors, aluminum rotors are generally recommended to operate for 1,000 to 1,500 cycles or 1,000 to 1,500 hours; thereafter, their operating speed should be reduced by 10% while continuing to use them for the same number of cycles and duration. Titanium rotors are guaranteed to last for 5,000 cycles or 10,000 hours.

Since centrifugal samples are mostly corrosive—even ordinary tap water can corrode aluminum rotors—when stress corrosion and chemical corrosion occur simultaneously, a phenomenon known as dual corrosion fatigue may arise, potentially reducing the rotor’s actual service life below its guaranteed lifespan.

If certain rotors are left unused for an extended period, their internal metal structure may undergo changes; therefore, they should be operated at reduced speeds. The manufacturer provides a warranty period of 5 years. Consequently, users are required to diligently record the number of operating cycles and the cumulative operating time for each rotor. Thanks to advances in technology, recent centrifuges are equipped with imbalance detection and protection systems that automatically perform safety safeguards and alarms, so users need not worry excessively when using them.
